The Reality Check…
Most people I work with are brilliant at what they do, but they sometimes worry about photoshoot prep, especially if it it isn’t something they are used to. They are local business owners, wellness coaches, and creatives who are incredible at what they do but if it is the first time you’ve had a lens pointing at you then it is not unusual to feel a bit “deer-in-the-headlights!”.
If that’s you, don’t worry, that’s exactly why I do things differently. Here is how we make sure your session feels less like a performance and more like a productive morning out in Dorset.
1. Focus on Movement, Not "Posing"
The biggest worry people have is “what do I do with my hands?” My approach is simple: we don’t pose. We move.
- For Fitness photography: We find your flow. If you’re a runner, we find a trail. A yogi, we find your studio – on a good weather day an outdoor “studio” in nature.
- For Personal branding: We capture you “in the zone” maybe that’s sketching, or just a relaxed walk while we chat.
- When you’re focused on an action you’re comfortable with, that “camera face” disappears and we get images that actually look like you.
2. Choose the Right "Home Turf" in Dorset or the New Forest
Dorset and the New Forest are full of incredible backdrops that help to tell your story. I can suggest great locations that fit your personal brand and your energy. If you’re a PT who thrives on high energy, the beach at sunrise is perfect. If you’re a consultant or creative looking for calm and groundedness, a quiet woodland clearing works wonders. Being in a space you enjoy is 90% of the battle.
3. Wear What You Actually Work In
You don’t need a brand-new, tags-still-on outfit. In fact, clothes that have been lived in and moved in often look better and feel more “you.”
- Pro Tip: Bring a couple of options. Maybe one technical outfit and one relaxed layer. It gives us variety without making the shoot feel like a marathon.
4. A Proper Chat: The Best Way to Prep for Your Photoshoot in Bournemouth
I don’t just show up and start clicking. Before we even book a date for a photo shoot, I like to meet my clients. That can be either for a coffee locally in Bournemouth or a proper chat over the phone.
This is the most important part of the process. It’s my chance to understand exactly what you need and, more importantly, it’s our chance to get to know each other. Forming that relationship early on is what takes the unfamiliarity out of the camera. By the time we actually meet for the shoot, the nerves have usually settled because we’re already on the same page.
5. Leave Perfection at the Door
Whether it’s fitness, personal brand or commercial photography, people connect with truth, not airbrushing. A bit of sweat, a stray hair, or a genuine laugh; these are the details that make people trust you. We aren’t aiming for a stiff corporate headshot or a generic magazine cover; we’re telling the story of your commitment and your personality. Authenticity tells the story that makes people relate.
